Objectives
  1. Practice how to explain to clients the neuroscience of hyperarousal in their “extreme parts.”
  2. Demonstrate how the role of criticism and neglect from caregivers causes shame cycles in your clients and how parts-work breaks the cycle.
  3. Create ways to engage parents in an exploration of their moments with compassion and empathy instead of guilt and shame.
  4. Determine the difference between Parent Coaching and Parent Healing.
  5. Demonstrate how to help parents lead from a place of power and set limits for their children while still expressing love and support.
  6. Differentiate among the various parenting styles vs. attachment styles and how they influence your client’s parenting approach.
  7. Evaluate what Internal Family Systems model of therapy brings to parenting with the “Parts” concept.
  8. Analyze your parent clients’ “reactive moments,” triggers, and the likely reasons behind them.
  9. Plan how to teach parent clients how to apologize for reactions and find an alternate approach to connect with their children.
  10. Propose an IFS-informed approach to co-parenting that helps promote improved intra-family relationships.
  11. Incorporate “a part of me language” in family conversation to allow for safe ways to have difficult discussions with children.
  12. Apply the “triggering agreement” intervention when working with clients around resolving parenting issues that arise for them.
